About CARDNO TCB (Christchurch)

History

Fredrick W. FreemanThe firm began life in 1906 when Frederick W. Freeman qualified as a Licensed Surveyor and set up business in Christchurch. He was also a Consultant Civil Engineer and practised as Frederick W Freeman, Licensed Surveyor and Consultant Engineer. Freddy Freeman was a highly respected member of Christchurch's surveying fraternity and the broader Canterbury community. He continued the practice until his retirement in 1946.

H. Jack Hudson, a Registered Surveyor originally from Auckland, subsequently purchased Freddy's practice and the business became H. J. Hudson, Registered Surveyor. In 1951 Jack employed a young cadet, Robert G. (Pip) Middleton who qualified as a Registered Surveyor in November 1958. Unfortunately, Jack died in 1958 and the recently qualified Pip Middleton carried on the business, purchasing the practice from the Hudson Estate.

Bruce N. Alexander joined Pip in partnership and the firm practiced as Middleton & Alexander. In 1966 John L. (Jack) Williams, a Registered Surveyor practising in Christchurch on his own account, joined the practice. Jack's firm, C.W. Williams, Registered Surveyor & Consultant Engineer, founded by his brother Claude was amalgamated with Pip and Bruce's practice to become Middleton, Alexander and Williams.

In 1970 Bruce Alexander took a year off to complete a Diploma in Town Planning from Auckland University and subsequently resigned from the practice in 1977 to pursue a planning career. Pip Middleton and Jack Williams carried on the partnership as Middleton Williams & Company until Jack's retirement in 1996.

Stephen J Wardle, a Registered Surveyor from Wellington, joined Pip in partnership on Jack's retirement. After a surveying career spanning fifty years, Pip decided to retire in June 2001 and Lester Simon Ironside, a Registered Surveyor originally from Invercargill, joined Steve in partnership on 1st July 2001. Steve and Simon decided to retain the well-known name of Middleton Williams & Company. Simon ressigned from the company in January 2003, at which point Maree Hynes stepped in as a director.

The firm continued under Maree's directorship, until 2007, when the company became a division of Truebridge Callender Beach Ltd (TCB): a multidisciplinary firm specialising in planning, land development and civil engineering.

In June 2007, TCB was acquired by the Cardno Group - an international company that specialises in worldwide land development projects, as well as eco-engineering, assisting third world and impoverished countries in developing a solid infrastructure, that both serves its' people and domestic needs.
